Steel Reinforcement destroys concrete

In August 1990 the Dubai Municipality has issued “Concrete Structures Guideline”. It explained problems related to concrete lifespan.

They start with thermal cracking of concrete surface due to intra-day temperature variations, normal for UAE outside environment. Download it here: Concrete Structures Guideline – Note #4

Water and chloride (salt), which are both available in UAE air dust, reach the steel reinforcement through cracks and it starts to corrode. Study made by The Petroleum Institute of Abu Dhabi on air corrosion is available here: Research: Air corrosion in Abu Dhabi

As metal reinforcement starts to rust, it expands; concrete cannot bear such types of load and collapses. As pieces of concrete fall out, the structure cannot safely bear the designed load.

This is how steel rust reduces life of concrete element to only few years.

Galen products are resistant to both water and salt and prevent concrete from internal damage. Learn more about GFRP benefits over steel
